The European Scaleup Ecosystem

Scaleups, not startups, are creating added value, jobs and expand international and economic value for stakeholders and society.

This small group is attracting the lion's share of venture capital, in some countries up to 90%. Omar Mohout of Sirris uses DataScouts as platform to visualize the remarkable insights of his data-driven research of the ecosystem of European scaleups.


European Scaleup Ecosystem

Alongside the rapid growth of the European startup ecosystem goes the rapid growth of the European scaleup ecosystem. Startups become scaleups when at least one of the following conditions is been met:

  • 10 or more employees.
  • External shareholder-oriented legal structure (i.e. S.A or N.V).
  • 1 or more foreign branches.
  • 10 or more years in business.

By implementing the DataScouts Ecosystem Intelligence Platform, Sirris aims to capture and visualize the evolution of most of Europe’s scaleups over the last decades, to monitor their growth and provide insights in how they are connected to enablers and investors facilitating them throughout the different stages of their venture.

Challenges & Goals

Omar Mohout, Growth Engineer at Sirris and Professor Entrepreneurship at Antwerp Management School, conducted research to European VC investments. He used a data-driven approach to track financing activity for VC-backed European tech companies and he uses DataScouts to visualize his remarkable findings.

Omar’s overview of scale-up VC investments has been established along the methodology he developed. Based on his methodology, Omar is able to systematically include or exclude companies from the scaleup ecosystem. The challenges regarding the inclusion and exclusion of companies to the ecosystem, are solved with the methodology. For example, only companies that have their operational HQ in Europe are considered and only deals of at least $1M / € 750M. Additionally, when it comes to the funding both private and public companies are considered and funding is registered based on announcement date. Debt financing, media equity, private placements, grants and convertible loans are included.

The geographic boundaries of the scaleup ecosystem are also tackled in the methodology, resulting in a select number of countries: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and UK. As a benchmark to these European countries, the data of Turkey and Israel are also included to compare against.
