How do i create a custom taxonomy in DataScouts?

Taxonomy is the practice and science of classification of things or concepts, including the principles that underlie such classification.

Within DataScouts you can implement a custom taxonomy to describe your market, your ecosystem and use the terminology that best fits the characteristics for your business environment.

Via the taxonomy editor you can customize

  • categories, i.e. classification of legal entities, individuals and (informal) communities and team
  • technologies, i.e. list of technical capabilities, skills, infrastructure and equipement applied in your business domain
  • activities, i.e. overview of relevant activities and services performed by the actors in your ecosystem
  • domains, i.e. application domains or domains of expertise
  • (target) industries, i.e. sectors and industries the actors are catering for

The taxonomy is the DNA of your ecosystem. It defines the key properties for classifying actors and hence the filters for analysing and clustering actors within the ecosystem.

Adding, deleting and editing

In order to update the taxonomy, open the taxonomy editor by clicking on the “taxonomy” symbol in the Configuration pane.

  • Open the taxonomy type you want to adapt by clicking the ˅ symbol
  • Click on the + symbol next to the taxonomy type to add a new taxonomy value.
  • Click on the pencil symbol to edit an existing taxonomy value
  • Click on the trash bin symbol to remove an existing taxonomy value

Don’t forget to ‘save changes’. Upon saving your changes, all related actors will be adapted. You receive an overview of the actual changes

  • the number of actors that are update by the taxonomy changes
  • the number of portfolios that were impacted by the taxonomy changes
